Indigenous Istrian Products

The EU quality policy aims to protect the names of certain products in order to promote their unique characteristics linked to their geographical origin and traditional know-how and skills. Product names may be granted a “geographical indication” (GI) if they have a specific link to the place where they are produced. The recognition of geographical indications strengthens consumer confidence and enables consumers to more easily identify quality products, while helping producers to better market their products. The geographical indications are as follows: PDO – Protected Designation of Origin (food products and wine)
PGI – Protected Geographical Indication (food products and wine)
GI – Geographical Indication (spirit drinks). EU geographical indications protect the names of products originating from specific regions and possessing distinctive features or a reputation linked to their area of production. The differences between a Protected Designation of Origin and a Protected Geographical Indication primarily relate to the extent to which the raw materials for the product must originate from a defined geographical area or the extent to which the production process must take place in a particular region. Product names registered as PDO have the strongest link with the place of production.
