Istrian honey
ISTRIAN HONEY PDO (Entered in the PDO Register by Commission Regulation (EU) No. 2024/1869 of 28 June 2024) - PDO-HR+SI-2833
Istrian Honey – “Istarski med / Istrski med” PDO is a natural product of honeybees (Apis mellifera), which gather nectar and honeydew on the sunlit slopes of Istria, amid a rich mosaic of plant communities. It is obtained through cold extraction, without heating the comb, thus preserving its original aroma and quality. This honey encompasses a wide range of varieties - acacia, sage, chestnut, linden, heather, as well as multifloral and honeydew honey - each distinguished by its own characteristic aroma and flavour.
The production area extends across the entire Istrian peninsula, the Cres–Lošinj archipelago, and parts of the Kvarner region and Slovenian Istria. From the red karst plains to the limestone ridges of Mount Učka, from holm oak forests to sage-covered pastures, every landscape leaves its unique imprint on this honey. Istrian honey is not merely a product; it is an expression of tradition, landscape, and knowledge, distilled into a golden drop.
