The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus)
The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) is a critically endangered species that successfully nests in croatia only on the Kvarner islands. Being a vul-ture is one of the main reasons for its vulnera-bility since the traditional cattle breeding is in decline, while it is also a collateral victim of car-cass poisoning aimed at exterminating cattle predators. It’s interesting to point out that cres has a rescue centre for Griffon vultures - Beli. In the area of Istria it can be seen as a flyover bird over the karst edge (učka – Ćićarija). this year one of the griffon vultures with a GPS tracker “wandered” over the western coast of Istria on its way from Italy to Kvarner.
